The landscape is volcanic with many rivers of lava. The last volcanic eruption is 2000 years ago. After the volcanic eruption arose rivers of lava, cave and lava tubes. Robert Limbert and W. L. Cole explored the area the first time in the year 1920. Since 1924 it is a nature reserve. The National Park service and the Bureau of Land look to the Craters of the Moon National Monument.
The climate is semiarid. The summer is hot and dry and the winter is cold.
In the Craters of the Moon National Monument are 375 species of plants, which we know. The Limber P

ine is one tree which grow there. The tree is ca. 20 to 35 meter high and can be up to 400 years old.
There are also wildflowers in the Craters of the Moon National Monument like the Dwarf Monkeyflowers and the Rubber Rabbitbrush. The wildflowers bloom from late April to September.
There are also many animals: 2000 species of insects, 8 reptilse, 169 birds, 48 mammals and 1 amphibian ( the Western Toad). The most animals are active at night, but some like lizards and chuck are diurnal.
